A simple visual way to teach kids what "take a deep breath" actually means.

Telling a child to "take a deep breath" doesn't always work—especially if they don't understand how to take one.

This poster teaches one simple breathing technique that breaks a deep breath into three easy-to-understand steps:

• 🌸 Smell the Flower — slowly breathe in through your nose.
• ⏸️ Pause for 2 Seconds — hold the breath for a short moment.
• 🐉 Breathe Fire Like a Dragon — slowly blow the air out through your mouth.

This was the technique that finally helped my own kids understand how to take a deep breath, because it turned an abstract instruction into something they could picture and actually do.

How to use it: Practice the three steps together when your child is calm so the technique becomes familiar. Then, when they're beginning to feel frustrated, anxious, overwhelmed, or dysregulated, point to the poster and guide them through the same familiar sequence.

When to use it: Keep it somewhere your child can easily see it—such as a calm-down space, bedroom, playroom, or classroom. It can be used when you notice the first signs of dysregulation, before a potentially stressful situation, or anytime your child needs help slowing down.

Instead of just saying "Take a deep breath," give them a visual that shows them how.
